USNSCC Webinar: Women's History Month - WWII CAPT Lucy Wilson Jopling's Daughters Discuss Service2/24/2022
To kick off Women’s History Month on March 1, 2022, at 8 p.m. EST we are honored to invite three guest speakers to discuss Captain Lucy Wilson Jopling's amazing career during World War II.
Please join us for a special webinar with the daughters of Captain Lucy Wilson Jopling. Suzie Franklin and Mary Yaeger will speak with cadets alongside LT Joy Clark, commanding officer, Captain Lucy Wilson Jopling division. In February 2022, a Sea Cadet unit in Big Sandy, Texas was renamed the Captain Lucy Wilson Jopling Division to pay tribute to her dedication to the Navy and her nation. Jopling was a Big Sandy native, and was one of the 101 Army nurses stationed in Bataan, Philippines prior to the onset of the U.S. involvement in World War II. Jopling and her fellow nurses, often referred to as the Angels of Bataan, retreated with their patients to the tunnels of Corregidor Island when the Japanese invaded Bataan. After five months of working under combat and near starvation conditions with their supply lines cut off, Captain Wilson Jopling was one of 13 nurses who were evacuated by the submarine, the USS Spearfish. After returning to the United States, she did a recruiting and war bonds drive by traveling around the country to speak.
