Scholarship Opportunities available to graduating Sea Cadets

Connecticut Council, Navy League of the United States scholarships
Dealey Divsion and the Navy League Connecticut Council strive to award scholarship money to graduating seniors who go on to college. Awards are based on financial need and supported by performance. These scholarships are available to Dealey cadets only while funds are available from the Connecticut Council.
In apply to your must interview before the Connecticut Council scholarship board prepare the following documents. Submit these documents by March 31st to the Commanding Officer. Interviews will be held in April.
These scholarships are not guaranteed as we rely on donations from other sources. If the money is not there, in any year we might not be able to replicate what we have done in the past. We will still hold the board and interviews. The amount of the scholarships awarded are primarily based on financial need but will be backed up by your performance in DEALEY Division. There are three yearly recurring scholarships normally available as well as special awards for those who enlist in the military or attend a service academy.
Scholarship, if any, will be awarded at graduation. All cadets must turn in all their uniforms and complete a Polaris course in the year of their graduation before any funds are released. College scholarships will be given directly the school and should be available in their bursar account. College scholarships will require the cadet to submit proof of enrollment and student ID number.

- Resume. Your school should have resources to help you create one if you haven’t already. Your counselor should have samples and can help you create one. There are many examples you can find on the internet as well. It should include you full name, address and all contact information. School attended, GPA and significant courses taken (AP, college level, honors…). Include any honors received, sports played, club memberships, instruments played and any leadership roles (captain of the team, lead actor in a play, student council…). Include work information and skills attained. Community service, Sea Cadet participation (include significant awards and leadership positions) and any other youth organization involvement.
- Essay. Your essay should be approximately one page single spaced (no more that two) that states your educational and life goals and how being a sea cadet has influenced you toward attaining those goals. It doesn’t have to be all about sea cadets but can include other leadership opportunities such as sports or other community service. But, make sure that you have significant sea cadet experiences that show how you have matured, learned responsibility and taken on leadership roles. There might be an advanced training, recruit training or other experience that has had a positive influence on your life. In the header of the essay include the current date, full name, sea cadet rank and date you started as a sea cadet or league cadet.
- FAFSA. The board only needs to see the pages that indicate your EFC (estimated family contribution) number and what grants and other scholarships you qualify for. We do not need to see an information on your parents' income and tax status. Make sure there are no social security numbers on the form. Without a FAFSA form the board has to assume that your family does not need financial assistance to send you to college.

- LCDR George Macintyre Scholarship. Money for this scholarship was donated by the late LCDR George T. Macintyre (longtime DEALEY Division CO) and his family. The scholarship is awarded based on performance and financial need where need is the driving factor. Only one cadet will be awarded this scholarship per year, but if no cadet meets the criteria, there will be no recipient. Once the donated funds are used, the scholarship will retire unless further funds can be raised.
- Captain John B. Finneran Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was implemented by CAPT Finneran, while he was our local Navy League’s council president. Funding is provided by the Robert Mize and Ida White Trimble Family Foundation. Funds are solicited each year and given based on need and performance. The Trimble Family Foundation requests that preferences are given to minority candidates with need and only to be used for cadets going to college.
- Ensign Edmund F. Kulka Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship donated by the Catholic War Veterans and their Post Commander Dr. Cortland Mehl. the scholarship is awarded based on financial need, supported by performance to a candidate that has interest in Naval or general aviation. Candidates should express the interest in aviation in their essay.
- The Connecticut Council will provide an enlistment award once the cadet has finished "boot camp" and has proceeded to their initial training. Completion of "boot camp" is a requirement.
- Cadets who attend a U.S Service Academy will be reimbursed/subsidized for the cost of their sword purchase which is mandatory at most academies. The cadet will contact the Navy League council for reimbursement.
